porn banners - an issue or an irritation? should they be removed? should they be kept, and, indeed, encouraged to grow? i don't think so, and i'll try to explain why i don't think so.
i've got loads of arguements against, indeed, i'm pretty much a proffesional arguer (to speak truthfully and without modesty) - you name a subject, and if i know anything about it, i can argue for or against it. the crown for biggest reason is being tossed between two plucky contenders, both valid, but which is correct? the first of these is "what about kiddies?! we don't want them seeing it! it's irresponsible to lt them, or even, as some sites do, make them." and it's close friend is "it makes the scene look shite!". both are valid, but which is most?
i'd say the latter is probably more valid; not because i don't care about what "minors" (pish term) see, but because they'll have all seen it already. don't get me wrong, i amn't some kind of sicko with no concern for the wee ones among us (i, myself, am a wee one - merely 15), but they'll all have seen porn in some form or other by the time they're able to use a computer sensibly. having said that, however, i don't think we should splash it in their faces, as that's silly.
the prestige of the scene is, in my opinion, the biggest problem. the scene has something over the warez scene: quality and sincerity. but, if we fall into the warez vice of porn banners, do we become any better than those we dislike? i think not, i fear. this is why we *must* avoid them. thankfully, the roa's taken a prompt stand against porn banners, banning sites that have them. the ar, however, has taken an ironic stance: they've taken the "we believe in freedom of speech, etc." line. completely out of character for Swizzle, as i think he just can't stand the idea of doing the same as the roa, but.....
