"BATTLE STATIONS"

After the success of the Riseholme pageant, Lucia and Georgie return to Tilling for their summer break. After settling in, Lucia, pressed on by the Padre, decides to hold a "garden get-together" in aid of charity in the garden at "Mallards", much to Mapp’s chagrin. Added to this, the "famous Blumenfeldt" piano belonging to Mapp is discovered to be, as Georgie describes it, "a hurdy-gurdy" and is relegated to the telephone room at "Mallards". Coplen, Miss Mapp’s able gardener, whose wages Lucia is paying during her tenure, is neglecting her flowerbeds but tending to Miss Mapp’s vegetables, which she is selling to the local greengrocer. Battle lines are drawn, much to the amusement of the locals. The garden fete is a triumph, and Mapp is livid.
