Common shrub of hedgerows and waysides. Usually has outcurved main branches and corky bark. Unpleasant-smelling leaves divided into 5­7 leaflets. Flat-topped sprays of fragrant white flowers appear June July. Berries black and luscious.
The Berries are not good to eat raw but make excellent jam.
