Gudgeon Gobio gobio
DISCRIPTION:
The gudgeon is a small fish with an elongated, spindal shaped body, large scales and two barbules. Gudgeon rarely exceed 2 oz and grow no larger than 15cm.
AGE:
5-8 years.
LOCATION:
Rivers, canals, drains and lakes.
BEHAVIOUR:
Shoaling often in large numbers. Able to produce sound.
FEEDING:
Active during summer months, bottom feeding but they are adaptable. Natural food includes caddis-fly larvae, fish eggs, worm and fly larvae.
SEASON:
All year round.
HABITAT:
Prefers fast running water over sand or gravel but also occurs in lakes. During summer it shoals up in shallow water and during winter finds the deep water.
BAITS:
Maggot, worm and caster.
