Grey Partridge
Perdix perdix
Length 29-31cm
A native gamebird, much persecuted but still common in many areas. Seen at close range, grey plumage is finely marked. Male has orange-buff face, dark chestnut mark on belly, maroon stripes on flanks and streaked back. Female similar but markings less distinct. Usually seen in small groups feeding mainly in arable fields. When disturbed, birds take to air with whirring, noisy wings.
