Lancashire is a county that is located in the North West of England. The west of Lancashire is bounded by the Irish Sea. The name Lancashire has been derived from the city of Lancaster, sometimes Lancashire is also known as County of Lancaster. Lancashire has the status of a ceremonial and non-metropolitan county. The county lies in the Region of North West England. The abbreviation by which Lancashire is referred as 'Lancs', this term was originally used by Royal Mail. People originating from this county are known as 'Lancastrians'.

Area wise Lancashire is ranked seventeenth, the administrative head quarters of Lancashire is in Preston. Population wise Lancashire has been ranked eighth. The total population of Lancashire is approximately around 1,450,100.

The county borders Cumbria, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside, and the unitary authorities of Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen.

The county before 1974 bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire, and Cheshire. A large part of Lancashire, surrounding Morecambe Bay, was removed. Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen were districts of the county until the 1990s, when they were made independent.
