I have many hippo things, cuddly toys, ornaments,soap dishes,pictures,teapot, plates, mugs and anything else I can lay my hands on, I thought it only fitting that I should dedicate a page on my web site to this wonderful mammal. The hippopotamus is a mammal of the family Hippopotamidae; an artiodactyl, ( An ungulate mammal; foot with two or four toes (first always absent, second and fifth small or absent); weight carried on the third and fourth toe, which usually form a cloven hoof; also known as the even-toed ungulate. ) There are two species: hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) of tropical African rivers; body large, barrel-shaped; naked skin dehydrates easily; spends day in water, emerges at night; skin exudes red droplets which protect from sunburn (and possibly infection); large oblong head; nostrils, ears, and eyes level with water surface when swimming; four webbed toes on each foot; can submerge for five minutes; and secondly, the pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) from West Africa; inhabits swamps and forests; shoulder height, 75 cm / 30 in; less aquatic than Hippopotamus amphibius; also known as hippo.
