Released in 1988 here are a few reviews of what people thought at the time.

Hammy has picked totally different bands for his first few LP's on Peaceville. That is immediately obvious when you compare DOOM and the band DEVIATED INSTINCT from Norwich. The Deviated one's are significantly more hardcore orientated and from this album I'd put them right at the top of the UK scene.

This is how pure HC should be played, with thought. Never generic, each track always has something special up it's sleeve even if the band border closely on thrash at times. This Lp should go down well anywhere by rights because tracks like 'Return of Frost' and 'Conquest for Eternity' are pure classics of the genre. But one thing that lets the side down a little is the vocals which are nigh on unintelligable, but the music should tear up a few of the comfortable UK metal roots.

'Mechanical extinction' includes music to mosh to so everyone's welcome in this one. The essence of HC is the lyrics and there's intelligence abounding on this front as well so all in all this is an excellant debut. The band live are pure mayhem all the way and should be promoted as the successors to CIVILISED SOCIETY, the band to carry the flag for the UK scene. Search this one out or we'll set Windy the Camberwick Green chainsaw holocaust on to you. (Mike Exley) Metal Forces

Also on Peaceville is Deviated Instinct's Rock 'n' Roll Conformity a twelves-track LP of fast, grungy metallic hardcore thrash that beats the drum a little too much. Accused type vocals ride on a very Accused sounding outfit that comes up with a few choice riffs and even has a C.O.C feel at times. The raw wall of noise production has all the elements of a fun platter that should be succesful among both crowds, especially the speedcore maniacs. (Pushead) Thrasher

Decent Metalcore with plenty of power. It gets kind of lost in parts, but the power is still maintained. Scary lyrics but true lyrics. Plus a mystery surprise track at the end of side 2 that Discharge fans will appreciate. Pretty good (Thashead) Flipside

What else can I say but 'Fuuuuck' what an awesome album. Definately one of the most original sounding records i've heard for a long time. Very heavy grinding riffs with just the right amount of metal tinges, combined with manic vocals makes this album a must. Stenchcore Lives (Smelly) Misc Fanzine

Deviated Instinct, self-styled 'stenchcore' merchants from Norwich, are far noisier and terminally more chaotic. In essence they are to easy listening what Xavier Russel is to Glam Rock. 'Rock 'n' roll conformity' a misnomer if ever there was, is the quartet's debut album, following their 'welcome to the orgy' EP and 'Terminal Filth Stenchcore' and 'Tip of the Iceberg' demos. Although their brand of lawless hardcore is raucous in the extreme, it does still boast a metal edge that should appeal to a few Kerrang readers. Not as pronounced an edge as, say, Concrete Sox, but still indicative of Hardcore's inexorable slide towards metal (or is it the other way round ?)

Apart from their sense of humour (one side of the album is called 'Camberwick Green chainsaw holocaust side' and sports a smiling, chainsaw wielding Windy Miller) what separated Deviated Instinct from the pack is vocalist Leggo. To say the man has an unorthodox style is an understatement. Even with the benefit of a lyric sheet it's nigh on impossible to follow anything he 'sings' as he sounds as if he's permently choking on the microphone. (Paul Miller) Kerrang

Predictable but well done metal-crunching thrash, though not as solo-laden as some of the more annoying purveyors of this genre. Powerful, unrelenting, but dare I say, conformist in it's own way. (TY) Maximum Rock 'n'Roll

Crust-mania. This is a really good LP of metal influenced stuff with bits of CELTIC FROST thrown in for grinding power. It's all original sounding and has loads of tempo changes which makes it even more interesting. My faves are 'Time and tide', 'when the chapter closes' and the tritle track, all good rippin' stuff. the pace goes from out and out blur to more powergrind bits. Good shit. (H) Misc fanzine.
