On this page - Introduction - General Information - How to get to Braunston
The biggest single canal enterprise is the Marina (on the A45), in addition there is a score of smaller businesses providing all the needs of the modern boater. On the towpath near the Marina is "The Stop House" where, in the old days, tolls were collected from the passing boats. The narrower canal just here is where there used to be a stop-lock to prevent water from the Grand Junction Canal flowing into the Oxford Canal. |

The village itself is on a ridge above the canal where All Saints' Church dominates the countryside for miles around. Built in 1849, it is the third church on the site and the Norman font still survives from the first; there is much of interest to see in the church which prides itself in its music. A visit is well worthwhile. The day visitor will enjoy strolling along the well kept towpaths or walking up to the village where, as well as the church, there are two pubs and a small group of shops (see below). There is also a canal-side shop near the bottom lock selling souvenirs and a limited range of food and ices. |

For those who enjoy a stroll, there is a free leaflet, "Discover Historic Braunston", giving details of circular walks around the village and descriptions of what to look out for. This is available from most shops and pubs. Also available is a booklet "Discover Braunston - a brief history of the village" for just £1. The more dedicated walker will enjoy the two long-distance
walks (which pass by), these are from London to Birmingham and
from Oxford to Coventry. Also, free guides are available for
120 walks
in Northamptonshire, and other counties as well. Those who would prefer to get away, can hire a boat from Union Canal Carriers or take a self-drive day trip on "Water Ouzel" or "Swan" (phone 07733 010790 for details). |
| Two minutes walk from the canal (up the footpath from Butcher's Bridge) brings you to the High Street; turn right and in 100yds you reach the Braunston Village Stores (which incorporates a Post Office). Opposite is a Tea Room and the Family Butcher (who also sells fresh vegetables), while a little further along the road is the Braunston Fryer. For more details about the shops (including opening times) click on "Shops" in the menu. |
