21 February, Conway Hall, London
It
was an animated meeting: so many came it was difficult to pack them in. - AGM: 96
bookings, 75+ attended. As well as individual members there were an encouraging number of
delegates from CLPs, unions and other LP organisations. We were lucky with the weather – important
-as some of those present had come from considerable distances. Despite expressions of alarm about the
direction in which the present leadership of the Labour Party was going,
everybody was in good spirits. They
particularly enjoyed the refreshments supplied by Treats.
In the morning, Billy Hayes (CWU), stressed
that his union was working for democracy in the Party. He deplored the expulsion of the RMT, which
further weakened Labour’s link with the unions and warned that the party’s
democratic structure, eroded under New Labour, would take years to rebuild.
RESOLUTIONS ON CAMPAIGNING ISSUES
The
AGM also passed seven resolutions on issues on which CLPD should campaign:
1.
Labour Party Policy making;
2.
Changing the leader: resolution and article;
3.
Scrapping Partnership in Power;
4.
[Opposing] State funding of political parties;
