Successful AGMCPLD held a lively and well attended Annual General Meeting on Saturday 23 February at Conway Hall in central London. A number of decisions taken in preparation for this year’s Labour Party annual conference. Walter Wolfgang gave his last NEC member report, as he stands down in October. He criticised the NEC for giving too many powers away and losing control of the party finances. Kelvin Hopkins MP gave the Parliamentary Party Report, commenting that although there had been a continuation of Blairite policies under Brown, changes were happening below the surface. The Commons’ vote by 140 Labour MP’s to support agency workers’ rights yesterday was a sign of that change. Jon Cruddas MP spoke of his deputy leadership campaign. It includes edited versions of five reports, all of which are available in full (MS Word format): Say no to no sayWithin days of his coronation, Gordon Brown laid bare his plans for reducing the decision-making status of the Party Conference and the CLPs and affiliated organisations of which it is comprised. His plans would abolish at a stroke our right to submit "contemporary" motions for Conference debate and decision. His proposals, ironically titled “Extending and renewing Party Democracy”, would transfer power from the Party Conference as a whole to the National Policy Forum, the Joint Policy Committee and a crude take-it-or-leave-it ballot of individual Party members. CLPD believes that the proposals
represent a serious threat to genuine Party democracy and urges Party
organisations to submit responses before the deadline on Friday September
14th to the Labour Party, 39 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0HA or via
labour.org/membersnet.

Hayden Phillips report: new threat to TU linkThe Labour Party’s historic link to the trade union movement is under threat. Sir Hayden Phillips, appointed by the Prime Minister to carry out the review of political party funding, is considering making a series of recommendations that would dramatically undermine the trade union — Labour Party relationship. In particular he has indicated he favours capping donations from trade unions and undermining the collective voice of union members in the party.
