Knitting is very conducive to thought. It is nice to knit a while, put down the needles, write a while, then take up the sock again. Dorothy Day

Knitting from the Netherlands - Traditional Dutch Fishermen's Sweaters
Knitting from the Netherlands - Traditional Dutch Fishermen's Sweaters
Henriette van der Klift-Tellegen
Dryad Press 1st UK 1987

From the picturesque fishing villages of the Netherlands come the historic sweater
designs collected for this treasury. The author spent three years travelling Holland's coastline, searching city archives and family albums for photographs of the classic fishermen's sweaters.
These patterns have never before been written down, but were part of an oral tradition passed from mother to daughter. With the advent of inexpensive machine-made sweaters it became unnecessary for women to take time to knit the traditional ones, and a beautiful part of the Dutch heritage was nearly lost.
The 40 patterns presented here were meticulously copied from historic photographs and have been reproduced in graph form, easy for the knitter to follow. Knitting instructions are given for all the traditional stitches, and photographs illustrate a knitted swatch of each.
This charming book is not just a superb collection of patterns and lore for the devotee of historic hand knitting, but also a fine pictorial tribute to one of Holland's loveliest - and least known - traditions.

Knitting from the British Islands - 30 original designs from traditional patterns
Alice Starmore & Anne Matheson
BCA 1983

A book of new, exclusive knitting patterns for all the family, inspired by traditional designs from the British coastline.
From Arans with their ancient Celtic symbols to intricate Fair Isles to fishermen's gansys, hand knitting has flourished in Britain for hundreds of years, and is a favourite of modern fashion.
Alice Starmore and Anne Matheson are sisters who grew up in the Outer Hebrides and have strong family links with the Scottish knitting heritage. For this book they have designed an exciting range of beautiful clothes - sweaters, dresses, jackets and much more. Taking traditional designs as their starting point they then interpret them in imaginative and inspiring new ways.
There is a rich variety of patterns to make based on all the major styles of British knitting including gansys, Fair Isle, Aran and Shetland Lace. Each one is illustrated in colour or black and white and has complete instructions and charts. Alice Starmore's text explains how the different knitting traditions developed - and the patterns themselves are excellent proof of how they continue to thrive.

Hollywood Knits Hollywood Knits
Bill Gibb
Pavilion 1st 1987

The chic knitwear worn by a galaxy of Hollywood stars as they posed so perfectly for publicity stills, can now be recreated for the first time as a reality. Any woman can play the vamp in Dorothy Lamour's figure-hugging beaded sweater, or achieve a
pouting innocence in Judy Garland's fluffy embroidered cardigan, while men can adopt an air of elegance in Cary Grant's casual cricket sweater or Gary Cooper's stylish ski jumper. In all, twenty glamorous items of Hollywood knitwear have been transformed into knitting patterns by international fashion designer Bill Gibb. They have been subtly updated with a look for the 1980s, and are presented with an informed commentary on the individual style and charisma of each of the star models. The easy-to-follow patterns are illustrated with clear sketches by Bill Gibb and superbly reproduced images of each of the twenty legends.

Machine Knitted Fabrics - Felting Techniques
Machine Knitted Fabrics - Felting Techniques

Janet Nabney
B T Batsford 1st 1992

Take a piece of machine knitting, put it in the washing machine so the fibres shrink and matt together, and what do you get? Felt!
Traditional felting used to be a long, messy and laborious task. But now, using Janet Nabney's exciting washing machine technique, it's quick and easy, and with the help of this book you will soon be producing some wonderful fabrics.
First Janet Nabney helps you understand the technical principles of felting, and how different types of fibre have different characteristics which affect the felting process. She shows you how to felt by hand, and then how to use the washing machine to achieve remarkable results. It's important to know how to calculate the effect felting will have on any given piece of machine knitting, and the book explains all that in detail. After that, you're away! You can achieve a wide range of effects depending on which fibres and stitches you use, and the book takes you through single and double-bed fabrics, Fair Isle, thread lace, tuck and weave, handmanipulated techniques, decorative techniques, garment shapes, and construction techniques.
Finally there are the projects - put your felting skills to the test with ties, jackets, waistcoats, capes and tops - and you can even try fabric painting on your felted fabrics. And once you have mastered the technique, there is no reason why you cannot try it out on other textiles - hand knitting, crochet ...
