Marching Bands

The celebrations take to the streets, when some of the  All Ireland marching bands that won the “Gerald Whelan Memorial” trophies at the All Ireland Fleadh in Tullamore perform.

Some of the scenes and comments from last year are below.

Text Box: 4th Gerry Whelan Memorial Weekend
Cootehill, Co. Cavan
19th—21st September 2008
Text Box: Promoted by Cootehill CCE Branch
Supported by local publicans: Ciaran Mullen; Don Smith; Hannigan’s; Bannon’s & Fergus Donaghue

The car park at St Michael’s church was awash with colour and sound from around 1.30pm in the afternoon as the bands coaches arrived. The weather was mixed but mainly stayed fine.

From 2pm onwards the main street fell silent as the band featured below led the march through the town.

The sounds and the colour were a spectacle as well as the choreography. The bands marched through the town stopping at several points along the way to perform to the residents and visitors who lined the steets.

The afternoon was a great success and was a tribute to the work undertaken to resurrect the Irish Marching Bands. The blend of colour, youth as well as experience was great to see with support from all involved and was a fitting tribute to the commitment Gerry had given.
