Discovered by Russian troops in July 1944 the Majdanek Nazi concentration and extermination camp near Lubin was the scene of some of Hitler's most disturbing handy work. Apart from using carbon monoxide, Majdanek was one of only two camps to use the deadly Zyklon B to poison victims in its gas chambers. In the hands of the Nazis, the efficient use of these chemicals would result in the extermination of a massive number of inmates. Majdanek was also unique among the death camps, in that Jewish prisoners did not form the overwhelming majority of its intake. Of the total inmates only 40% were Jewish, 35% Polish and the balance predominantly Belarusians, Ukrainians, Austrians, French, Russians, Italians and Dutch. This rare and stark documentary graphically portrays the methodical murder, starvation and torture of an estimated 2 million innocent victims and demonstrates the frightening efficiency of the German death camps. In 1942 the German fronts were at their most extensive. German soldiers were deployed from North Cape to Africa and from the Atlantic Coast to the Caucasus. Although still marching forward in Africa and Russia, the military situation as a whole had undergone a fundamental change with entry into the war of the United States of America. In the west, the Luftwaffe had forfeited its superiority and the Royal Air Force was growing in strength day by day. At sea too, the situation was changing. Convoys became equipped to deal with the menace of submarines and, with the loss of the Bismark in 1941, the deployment of German battleships in the Atlantic was virtually ended. In 1944, the battleships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen made a spectacular dash through the English Channel back to Germany, never to return to the Atlantic. The U Boat offensive collapsed in the summer of 1943 and from then on the German navy was almost entirely on the defensive. Following the successful Allied landings on D Day, the German Army was progressively pushed back into Germany and beyond the Rhine. On the 16th of December 1944 the Germans mounted one last attack through the Ardennes but were forced back to their starting positions by the 7th of February 1945. One month later, 7th of March 1945, the Allied armies crossed the Rhine at Remagen and pushed forward, almost unhindered into the interior of the Reich.
