FENS' £8m FLOOD SHIELD TAKES SHAPE

First stage of a giant drainage scheme, designed to protect 400,000 acres of Fen from flooding, has now been completed. It is to be opened by the Duke of Edinburgh. The whole scheme, which is the biggest drainage operation to be carried out in this country. It has been planned to cope with floods greater than any yet experienced. The new drainage enterprise, the Great Ouse Protection Scheme, which will be completed in 1963, is likely to put an end to that recurrent hazard in Fenland farming.

The first stage, which as cost £3.5 million, as involved the cutting of a flood relief channel, 11 miles long, roughly parallel to the tidal River Ouse, from Denver to a point just south of King's Lynn, where it connects with the river. This is controlled by sluices at both ends and at times of high tide it will be used as a reservoir for the floodwater coming in from the east. These will be released into the Ouse as the tide falls.

The channel has a storage capacity of 2,100 million gallons. Nearly 11.5 million cubic yards of soil was dug up in the making of this gigantic furrow and that has resulted in the loss of about 400 acres of farming land. The second stage of the protection plan was started two years ago and should be finished next year. It consists of widening and deepening the River Ouse from Denver to a point just south of Ely, a distance of 19 miles.

House closed 1959 according to S&P documentation. However S&P (Ely ) wrote to the Thetford Licensing Justices 07.01.1964 stating, ` Since sale of intoxicants at the above having ceased some considerable time ago, the house closed and the licence is not being made use of elsewhere, we now wish to voluntarily surrender the licence'. In spite of this request the last licence for the house was issued 5th February 1964

Says Mr. Walter Attesey, who has been farming since1926 at Southery: "I have now built a new bungalow, a thing I dare not do three years ago. "In addition, it is a big help to be able to buy manures and seed at this time of year. Until this scheme came along, we could not risk buying until the danger period had passed."
At this present time, the black soil on which we grows Sugar Beet, Potatoes and Chicory, is in peak condition. The people who are really interested in the Fens, particularly those who get their livings from it, are welcoming this scheme. It will give us security we never had before.

Mr. J. H. Copsey, Campsey Farm, and Southery, who has been farming the Fen for 40 years, and remembers floods as far back as 1912, echoed his sentiments. "We have been in danger of flooding for as long as I can recall," "If the scheme removes that fear, it will be well worth while."
