A bomb from a Wellington, which crashed in 1942, has been unearthed in a Southery field.
The bomb had lain undisturbed on the land belonging to farmer Mr. Bill Watkins, of Towlers Farm, Larmans Fen. It was found by a chap with a metal detector, who was there with my permission," said Mr. Watkins. "We knew the aircraft wreckage was there but we didn't know about any bombs."

Two years ago the Fenland Aeronautical Society dug up part of the aircraft, including an engine, which had crashed in 1942 while flying from RAF Feltwell. The bomb was found about 18" deep on land, which was regularly cultivated. "But the disposal team said the chances of it going off were virtually nil," said Mr. Watkins.

Southery all Stars Amateur Dramatic Group successfully went public for the first time on Thursday 9th February with its production, Dick Whittington And His Cat.

Villagers got together under the direction of Mr. Geoff Preston, licensee of The Ship Inn and had been rehearsing since October. Mr. Preston, who had to join the 35 strong, cast himself at the last minute when the bosun, Nick Kisby, was involved in a road accident.

CRASH victim Nick Kisby had the surprise of his life on Sunday when this outlandish crew dropped in at Ely's RAF Hospital to see him.
Other patients gazed open-mouthed as the cast of the pantomime dressed in their splendid costumes, descended on 18-year-old Nick. Just 3 days before the show opened Nick had car accident his twin sister Jo said Nick had been more anxious about missing the show than his injuries.

There was no doubt about the performances of the evening, Vincent and Sam Osler, made a tremendous comic duo. The funniest scene was when they decided they were made for one another, I rolled around with laughter.

August: Sixty-year-old Mr. Arthur Copsey bet a friend he could ride a cycle more than 20 miles and he finished by raising more than £1000 for cancer research.

Mr. Copsey took part in a sponsored cycle ride from Southery home to Hunstanton a distance of around 35 miles.

He completed the entire journey on the front seat of a tandem, with a little help from nine friends who took it in turns to pedal at the back. He finished the ride in a little under three hours, and said afterwards it had been very successful. "It started out as a bet that I couldn't ride more than 20 miles on a bicycle, then a bet that I couldn't raise more than £250," he explained.

Mr. Copsey said he was not tired after the ride, but vowed he would not do it again.

A further £250 was raised at a cake stall and raffle at Southery on the same morning. That was organized by Mrs. Vera savage.

He added that he did not want to take the credit himself, and thanked all the people who helped him in the ride. "It's a team effort ," he said.

THE FIELD VOLE OR GRASS MOUSE
(Microtus agrestis)
A small - brown - furry - short eared - short tailed mouse - the meadow vole depends on grass for both food and shelter. It is widespread in Europe and varies a good deal but - whatever the subspecies - it is ever the same inoffensive beast watched over by owl and kestrel - buzzard and fox - weasel and stoat. Yet - despite the efforts of these predators - it is subject to periodic fluctuations when it may become excessively numerous. A vole plague is a serious thing - the swarming voles eating all greenery - but disease breaks out and they vanish for the time being.
