Cautions

The oils described within these pages are not toxic per se, however, the web author cannot be held responsible for any adverse effects resulting from improper or unwise use of any essential or carrier oil. When using pure essential oils at home, remember the following:

Do not take internally without consulting a professional aromatherapist or doctor.

Avoid Rosemary and Thyme oils if you have hypertension.

Citrus oils are phototoxic and can cause rashes and skin pigmentation if used before exposure to the sun or sunbeds.

For babies and children, use only safer, gentle oils such as Chamomile, Lavender or Tangerine/Mandarin, and only then in extra-dilute quantities.

Do not apply neat oils to the skin-with the exception of Tea-Tree and Lavender.

If you suffer from epilepsy, allergies, are pregnant, breastfeeding or are using homeopathic remedies, be cautious about using essential oils. Some are safe, some are not (see: contraindications). If in doubt, seek professional advice.

Keep oils out of the reach of children.

If anyone accidentally swallows any pure essential oil, seek urgent medical advice.

Keep oils away from the eyes. If you do get any in your eyes, wash out immediately with lots of warm water.

Pure essential oils are flammable, keep away from naked flame.

Asthmatics should avoid directly inhaling pure essential oils, as this can sometimes bring on an asthma attack.

Avoid contact with polished, painted or plastic surfaces.
