Lemongrass
Cymbopogon citratus
Citrus
Lemongrass [as the herb] has been been used for thousands of years in the traditional Indian medicine, Ayurveda and it has long had the reputation for it’s ability to lower body temperature during feverish illnesses. It also relieves flatulence, colic, and gastro-enteritis. The oil has antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties and is a good cure for athletes foot and ringworm.
Lemongrass makes an excellent massage after strenuous exercise and as it contains a high quantity of the analgesic compound, Myrcene, it can bring relief to muscular aches and pains. It is an insect deterrent, although not as powerful as Citronella. And as it has deodorant properties, it makes a wonderful footbath for tired, sweaty feet at the end of a long day.
Contraindications- Lemongrass can cause skin sensitisation, so it must be used well diluted. If in doubt, do a 24 hour patch test first. It is a very strong, odiferous oil, but if blended with Mandarin or Tangerine oils, this dilutes the strong smell and at the same time lessens the risk of an adverse skin reaction.
Blends well with Mandarin, other citrus oils, Vetiver and Palmarosa.
