Melissa

Melissa officinalis

Lemony/fresh

Also known as Lemon Balm, Melissa is effective on indigestion, colic, flatulence and nausea. It is very expensive due to the fact that 7 tonnes of the leaves and tops of the plant (before it blooms) are needed to produce 1 kg of the essential oil. It is also rare and difficult to obtain because of this, and is one of the most frequently adulterated oils. Lemon, Citronella and Lemongrass are the most frequently substituted oils. Due to the lemony smell of all these oils, it can be difficult to tell the difference, so always try to buy Melissa from a reputable source.

Melissa helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and it promotes fertility as well as being useful in the treatment of anxiety, mild depression and insomnia. It is also recommended for stress related physical conditions, such as palpitations, vertigo/dizziness, breathlessness and headaches caused by emotional tension. Some aromatherapists have found Melissa to be of value in times of bereavement, shock or grief.

Contraindications- Melissa is classified in France ( where it grows) as a stupeficant or narcotic essential oil. It is a potent oil, use with caution. Do not exceed a 1% dilution. Do not use on damaged or diseased skin. Do not use on children below the age of 2.

Blends well with  Lavender. Geranium, floral and citrus oils.
