Valerian
Valeriana fauriei
Woody
Valerian is current in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia as a specific for “conditions presenting nervous excitability”. It is probably the most sedative of all the essential oils in use in aromatherapy and it is primarily a central nervous system depressant. It is excellent for anxiety, restless tension states, irritability and, in particular, insomnia. A few drops on a cotton wool ball, placed under your pillow at bedtime, will ensure a good night’s sleep-but, the aroma is not to everyone’s taste, being very musky, so Vetiver can be added to it for the same, sedative effect.
Contraindications-Use in moderation. Valerian can exacerbate clinical depression, so use with caution if this is a problem.
Blends well with Patchouli, Pine, Cedarwood, Lavender and Vetiver.
