Vetiver
Vetiveria zizaniodes
Woody
In India and Sri Lanka, where Vetiver grass is grown, it is used to protect domestic animals from vermin and it is also woven into mats, fans and awnings to protect the home from insects and moths. The householder sprinkles water on these mats and tatties, which cools the room and the delightful scent pervades the house and keeps pests at bay at the same time.
Vetiver is known as “the oil of tranquillity” for good reason-it is deeply relaxing and a popular oil in the treatment of stress related conditions and insomnia. It can be a useful fixative in a blend as it has a base note and it prolongs the scents of the other oils in the mix-although, if the aroma is liked, it is a sensually intoxicating oil to use alone.
Vetiver is useful for oily skin, minor cuts and wounds, and acne. It is considered to be an immune system stimulant, particularly when prolonged stress threatens to undermine the health. It has grounding properties as well, which stabilises the emotions and calms the over-excited mind.
Blends well with Clary Sage, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang and Rose Otto.
