He was born 9 June 1844 the son of Phillip and Margaret or Martha (Carson) Hughes possibly in Warren County, TN.

At one time the family was living in Beersheba Springs area in the 1860s.

He enlisted in the Regiment on the 20 November 1862, soon after his two brothers had joined.

He was slightly wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro, 31 December 1862.

On The 25 November 1863 he was captured at Ringgold, GA, and sent to Rock Island, IL, where he took the oath on 25 October 1864.

He was to end up in Louisville (Jeffersontown) where he met and married Julia Yeager.

He died 26 March 1919 in Louisville.
