He was born on the 10 January 1834 in Cummingsville, White Co, now Van Buren Co.,  to William Burrell and Martha Ann (Denney) Cummings.

He was a farmer.

Married Martha Leonora Morgan, on the 19 0r 20 May 1860 in Van Buren Co., she was born 18 May 1860, in Van Wert Community, Rockmart, Polk County, GA.

They had 12 children: Gabriel Francis Marion, Martha Elizabeth Ann ‘Mattie, Joseph Denny Morgan, William Burrell Clinton,  Lucinda Elliott Josephine, Mallia Magnolia Alice, Minnie Minora Pauline, Mary Jane Susan , John Lafayette Beason, Charles Victor Hugo, Henry Otis Eugene and Lee Ella Alice Cummings.

He enlisted on the 20 May 1861 at Camp Harris, entering as a Sergeant.

Transferred into C Company, 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional army, also called the 35th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, on the 1 May 1862.

Elected Captain on the 6 May 1862.

Absent without leave during September-October 1862.

On leave November-December 1863.

By 9 September 1864 he was classified as 'officer of train', possibly at Macon, GA.

Paroled on the 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, NC.

Filed for a pension S3371 on 27 May?1901 when living in Monterey, Putnam Co., this was rejected.

He died on the 25 November 1903 in Sparta, Van Buren Co., and is buried in the Hodges Cemetery, Cummingsville, Van Buren County, TN, as Captain G. M. Cummings.

His wife died on 9 February 1835 in Polk Co., GA.  She is also buried in the Hodges Cemetery, Cummingsville, Van Buren County, TN. Other info says she is buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Polk County, GA.
