George Cairncross, born 1610 Edinburgh, died 1667 Scotland. Litster or dyer burgess of the Cannongate. Married Christiam Ogilvie (1619-1668).

a. Alexander Cairncross, litster and burgess of Canongate, born 1637 Edinburgh, died 14 May 1701 Raphoe, Donegal, Ireland. Baptised 22 Oct 1639 Canongate, Edinburgh. In 1657 Alexander studied at Edinburgh University and was lauriated on 26 July. On 31 Oct 1662 he was licenced by George, Bishop of Edinburgh. Elected by the Town Council on 29 Apr 1663 in Edinburgh. Was translated to Dumfries from Edinburgh Trinity College Church, and was admitted before 30 Aug 1668. Alexander was given sasine (deed transferring ownership of property) in the lands of Langlie in 1675. Promoted to the Bishopric of Brechin on 10 Aug 1684, and on 6 Dec of the same year he was again promoted to the Archbishopric of Glasgow. Alexander was the Archbishop of Glasgow from 1684 to 1687. He was appointed Bishop of Raphoe, Co. Donegal, Ireland on 16 May 1693. In 1699, he purchased Manderstone in Berwichshire. He died in office on 14 May 1701. 1. William McGrigor Cairncross, born 1662 Langlee, Roxburghshire, died 1754 Langlee, Roxburghshire. Married Jean Bowman (1664-1749).

a. Elizabeth Cairncross, born 16 Oct 1688 Langlee, Roxburghshire, died 3 Sep 1761 Jedburgh, Scotland. Married 1710 Kirkaldy to Sir John Rutherford (1686-1765). Had daughter Margret (1714-1791).

b. Austin Cairncross. Nothing known.

c. Alison Cairncross, died 1670. Married David Home of Whitfield.

2. George Home. He inherited both Whitfield from his father on 24 July 1686 and Manderstone from his uncle in 1701. George Home was Commissioner of Supply for Berwickshire from 1686 –1704: M.P. for New Galloway 1703-7. He married Margaret daughter of Sir Andrew RAMSA of Abbotshall, Lord of Session and by 1703-7 had the following children:

a. Alexander Home, inherited Manderstone; sold the property and purchased another between Edinburgh and Leith called Whitfield. He married the heiress of Drummond of Kildees but died without isssue on 20 Nov 1722.

b. George Home, of Bristol.

1. George Home, Lieutenant, Royal Navy. Married Ann Aubrey.

a. Alexander Home, died in 1805, also Lieutenant, Royal Navy. Married Elizabeth Gurney. Elizabeth (Gurney) HOME married secondly Benjamin Pilliner of Monmouthshire.

1. Alexander George Home, having inherited Whitfield, purchased Mount Aeolus Portobello, Midlothian. He qualified as a doctor and was for a time surgeon to the 2nd Dragoon Guards. He married in 1844 Hannah Priscilla, born 1827, daughter of Josiah FAIRBANK by Sara CARBUTT, his wife.

a. George Home, born 27 Aug 1849 South Leith, Edinburgh..

b. Eugene Home, born 18 Sep 1860 Duddingston, Midlothian. Married Sarah Ada, born 1865.

c. David Cairncross, who joined Prince Charles, in 1745 and was taken prisoner at Carlisle.
