2001 Aug 1:  Tom Boles emails to try for a spectrogram of his new SNe suspect in UGC 913 - Andromeda [see below] but it proves too close to the parent galaxy nucleus and faint at mag15.6 . The galaxy UGC 913 has a recessional redshift velocity of 5400km/s and [in theory] just detectable with the WPO very lo-res spectrograph [Rainbow grating before CCD in non-objective/field mode] by a shift of Ha line, for example, by ~2 pixels.

2001 May 17: SNe spectra with the lowest practical dispersion [8.5nm/pixel] in this set-up with the grating in contact with the CCD window.   Exposure duration approximately halved [to 5m] but still reveals a strong SiII absorption band of SN type 1a.  Pollux [b Gem] added for comparison shows weak atmospheric absorption lines of A, a, and B.

2001 May 9:  Tom Boles emailed requesting a confirmatory spectrum on a bright [mag 13] suspect SN he had just discovered in NGC 2608 - his 8th.  Cloud precluded observation for 48 hours!  Short exposures via 30cm SCT plus Rainbow grating [dispersion 5nm/pixel] clearly showed a wide absorption band centred at 611nm [SiII] typical of SNe type 1a with repeat observations the following evening.   I was pipped to the post by pro spectra taken within 24 hours of discovery with an IAUC issued designating the object SN 2001bg.  Tom's discovery and 'master' images of NGC 2608 are on The Astronomer page.
