IAUC 8380+1 - 5 August 2004 - Akira Takao, Kitakyushu, Japan (reported via H. Yamaoka, Kyushu University, Japan) possible nova at mag 7.4 on unfiltered CCD images taken with 120-mm telephoto lens on August 3.583 UT . Takao reports nothing visible at this location on images taken July 18.637 UT (limiting magnitude 11.9), July 30.569 (limiting mag 10.8). William Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile reports fainter than m11.0 on Tech Pan film (with orange filter) on July 19.40 UT . This is the 2nd nova discovered in Scorpius within a month <4o apart!

2004 Aug 12/19: Initial single 20s exposure secured before nova at -32o Dec 'set' into local southern horizon. Skies clearer for 30s exposure [Aug 19] but image soft due to very low altitude [<1o] and vertical atmospheric dispersion.
