Thanks for your interest in our church. Records indicate that there has been a church on the site for 550 years now. It is of great interest both geographically and historically, and of course it means so much more to the people of the area who worship at the Kirk Sunday by Sunday.

At the risk of their lives with their flocks they did meet

In storm and in tempest, in rain and in sleet;

Where the mist on the moor glens lay darkest, ‘twas there

In the thick cloud concealed they assembled for prayer.

Situated in a very exposed area of the country, it has been claimed that the four winds meet at the Kirk door! It is therefore in constant need of maintenance and repair.

Until now members of the congregation have managed to keep it wind and watertight and they were prepared to do their best to re-roof it. However, a feasibility study carried out by the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland gave us some devastating news.

The sum of £555,450 needed to be spent on the building to bring it up to the standards required today. After recovering from the initial shock we set about investigating how we could raise such a staggering amount.

Historic Scotland expressed their interest and indicated that they would be prepared to give a substantial percentage towards the cost if we could raise the rest. The General Trustees of The Church of Scotland also promised their support. Various other bodies also contributed to the restoration fund.

Restoration work was carried out in 2005 by Hunter & Clarke Ltd. which comprised of comprehensive roof works to the main church roof, belfry, vestry and porch roofs including re-slating of all roof pitches, rot eradication and repairs to roof structure, roof ventilation, renewal/repair of all roof flashings including lead apron flashings, parapet gutter lining & skews. Repair/renewal of downpipes. inspection and repair of underground surface water drainage. Masonary repairs/rebuilding of church buttresses, vestry gable and chimney; general masonary repairs to church walls and window tracery by selective indenting and re-pointing. Replacement of existing render on porch with lime based harl. Stained glass repairs and window guards, repairs to windows and doors. The total cost of this restoration work was £362.468.

The internal renovation of the church was carried out by members of the congregation in 2007 (Jan-Sept) and THE CHURCH WAS RE-DEDICATED ON 12th SEPTEMBER 2007.

(The original contractor for the church rebuild in 1876 was John Louden, Airdrie, the cost was £2,518 plus architect fees which brought the total to £2,720.)

OUR NEXT PROJECT IS THE UPGRADING OF THE HALL CHURCH. (Nov. 2008). All donations towards this will be gratefully accepted.
