Although primarily a meat breed, the Texel's native environment has endowed it with many invaluable commercial traits. Hardy and thrifty ewes produce exceptionally strong lambs, with a healthy attitude to early life. From the harsh native environment of the Frisian Islands, the breed is able to thrive on poor pastures and requires only modest amounts of supplementary feed prior to lambing and whilst suckling.

Although perceived as a lowland breed, the Texel has shown its capability to withstand even the most severe Scottish winter. Combined with its propensity to tranmit its qualities to its progeny, the Texel is making a name for itself amongst flockmasters who not only need hardiness and thrift, but also prime carcass quality.
