Llanidloes, Bethel Street. Used as an
ironmonger's shop for most of the last century, this chapel was in its
prime one of the centres of Welsh nonconformist culture. The
building depicted, erected in 1821, replaced an earlier one of 1779.
The brick extension at the front was added in 1899. In the
middle of the 19th century this chapel was attracting over 1000 people a week to
its Sunday services. |

Presbyterian chapel, next door to the original Bethel chapel shown above.
It was built for the "English cause" or Calvinistic
Methodists whose first language was English. |
