Library searches

Searches may be made for members in the Society's library.  The library (in addition to our published items and other genealogical publications) includes unpublished memorial inscriptions, records of baptism and marriage, census returns etc.  There is no charge to members for this service.

Searches on computer

Please note that, generally speaking, it is far easier to access the computerised holdings, detailed below, than the paper deposits in the library.  We now hold over three quarters of a million varied records relating to Montgomeryshire individuals on computer.

1891 and 1901 census databases (1841 census - please see below)

The 1891 and 1901 census databases, which cover the whole county, contains about 65,000 records.  There is no charge to members for searches.

The baptism, marriage and burial register databases

The marriage register database includes all Montgomeryshire marriages 1813-1837 and many more before 1813.  There is no charge to members for searches.

The baptism register database covers most Montgomeryshire baptisms 1813-1837, including many not on the International Genealogical Index (IGI), and a number before 1813.  The burial register database contains thousands of burials 1813-1837 and many before then.  There is no charge to members for searches.

These databases contain over 50,000 records covering many more individuals.

North Wales BMD

The North Wales BMD databases, which cover the whole county, contains about 382,000 records.  They are a composite index of the indexes to the registers of births, marriages and deaths maintained by the local registrars in Montgomeryshire between 1837 and about 1950.  Compiled by MGS members in conjunction with Gwynedd and Clwyd Family History Societies.  Also searchable online.  For a link to the North Wales BMD website, please see the Links page.

Memorial inscriptions database

Includes all inscriptions in the Society's publications and thousands of others.  This database now includes over 38,500 memorials, amounting to about 100,000 individuals.  There is no charge to members for searches.

1841 census database and London research

Although we have published the 1841 census for the whole county, members may request a search for named individuals (but an SAE should be provided when applying by post).  There are about 70,000 records in this database.  There is no charge to members for this service.

Limited research in all London record offices is also available at a general search fee of £2.50 per half hour or part thereof.

Other services

Also available to members are limited Welsh/English translation, strays searches and searches in the Shrewsbury burgess rolls.
