What we are all about

The Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies and the Association of Family History Societies of Wales.

Its main aim is to help members trace their Montgomeryshire family histories. It also helps members with family connections in Shropshire, Cardiganshire, Denbighshire, Merionethshire and Radnorshire.

We help by:

 offering advice to members researching their family history

 circulating details of help wanted by members in our journal the Record

 providing access to the Society's library

 keeping members' interests indexes (click here for a list of names members have been, or are currently researching)

 publishing local records of family history interest

 transcribing and recording new material for members' benefit such as:

    • memorial inscriptions from parish churchyards and chapels
    • parish and chapel registers - baptisms, marriages and burials
    • and census returns.

In addition, members have:

 free issue of our journal the Record which appears three times a year.

    • Besides members' interests, this contains articles, transcripts and a host of other information of benefit to people with interests in Montgomeryshire and its borders.

 a series of talks on topics relating to Montgomeryshire genealogy.

    • These are normally held in Newtown on the first Saturday of the month from September to November and from February to April.

 occasional meetings in other towns and villages in the county and regular outings to transcribe memorial inscriptions in the summer months.

 an annual Christmas lunch.

The current subscription rates are:

 £7 per year individual membership;

 £8 per year family membership (two members at the same address in the UK or European Union);

 £10 per year overseas membership (members outside the United Kingdom and European Union).

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Society, you can download an application form and post it to the membership officer, together with your subscription.  Please click on the "Application Form" link below.

Overseas membership subscriptions may be paid via our pages on the FFHS's Genfair website, where you can join and renew online.  Please see the "Links" page below for a link to Genfair.  Society publications may also be ordered and paid for online via Genfair.

Subscriptions are due in sterling but members resident in the USA may pay in $bills at a rate of $30 per year.  However, the cheaper option is to pay by Genfair, as above.  At current exchange rates, the annual subscription works out at between $16 and $17.

SOCIETY RESEARCH ROOM IN NEWTOWN

A society research room in Newtown was officially opened by Lord Hooson on Friday 16 March 2001. The opening of the premises represents the fruition of an idea which we have had under consideration almost since the society was founded back in 1994.  An extension of the premises was acquired in early summer 2007.

The society previously had no home as such although the Wesleyan chapel in Newtown was used for most of our meetings at the time. Members were largely reliant on the post to obtain access to the library. Records were available at open events and at meetings but the room provides more convenient and regular access. It provides a focal point for our activities and is a centre where family historians can come to research and compare notes.

The library room is open to members without charge although voluntary donations may be made to assist in maintaining it and ensuring that it is a viable proposition.  It is open to the public as well as to members but there is a mandatory charge for non members of £5 per day or part thereof (after some months experience of running the room the charge to non members was reduced).  The room is staffed at all times by members and is open on a reasonably regular basis, currently on Tuesday (market day) and Thursday, 10 am to 4 pm.  To avoid possible disappointment, visitors should always check with the librarian in advance that the room is open on a particular day.

The room is situated above Brooks Cycles in the Severnside Centre at the east end of Ladywell Street (leading to the Ladywell Centre).  The nearest entrance is from Shortbridge Street, near the Post Office and almost opposite the Robert Owen memorial.
