GRANBY OPEN GARDENS
A number of families have already agreed to open their gardens on 11 June at this village fundraising event - but we still need more. The great success of the event, 3 years ago, was partly due to the wide variety of gardens on show. They don't have to be 'Show Gardens'. Gardens in the process of development are equally appreciated; what one gardener can achieve in a relatively small patch is just as interesting and inspiring to the visitor.
There are plans in hand to incorporate a small craft fair, teas in the Village Hall and the possibility of an art exhibition etc. Consequently, volunteers will also be needed to help supervise a number of activities.
Hopefully, everyone will do their best to make our lovely village look attractive and
tidy. It's been most heartening to see that a number of areas in the village have been really tidied up in recent weeks and we hope that this will encourage others to follow suit. We can all help by trying to control litter and by checking overhanging branches, bushes and weeds at the curtilages of our properties. Some of our village paths are very narrow and parents with buggies and elderly folk do have problems negotiating some of the lanes. We can also help the general picture by removing our wheelie bins from the public paths asap after emptying. There will be more information in the near future but if you are interested in opening your garden or being involved in any way, please contact Angela Sinclair, Chairman of the Parish Council, or any Parish Councillor listed overleaf.

COMMUNITY
SPEED WATCH
A Community Speed Watch scheme has been established in Granby and Sutton, the second to get up and running in Rushcliffe. Members will be out monitoring traffic speed along our roads. The project aims to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding through villages and we hope drivers will co-operate by slowing down to make our community a safer place. Drivers who exceed the speed limit can expect contact from the police.
DARE GRANT
Granby-cum-Sutton Parish Council has given £35 towards T-shirts for pupils at Orston Primary School who complete the Dare anti-drugs programme.
CONSUMER
DIRECT
Consumer Direct is a new government backed telephone and online consumer advice and information service from the Department of Trade and Industry. It provides clear, practical consumer advice, free of charge, on a range of issues or complaints.
Consumer Direct East Midlands launched on 27th June. The service is available six days a week and callers to the helpline will be connected to professionally trained advisors at the contact centre in Lincoln. They aim to provide consumers with the knowledge, tools and confidence to resolve consumer problems themselves and work in partnership with local trading standards services, Citizens Advice and other existing consumer advisory bodies to deliver a complete service.
Call Consumer Direct from 8am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm Saturday (excluding bank holidays and public holidays) Call charges may vary.

CYCLE LANES - FOOTWAYS
AND HORSERIDERS
If you ride anywhere where there are cycle lanes painted in the road or created in the verge you will be interested in a Legal Opinion obtained by the BHS. Put simply, this says that whilst horse riders have no right to ride in these lanes, they are not committing an offence by doing so. The various Road Traffic and Highways Acts have not excluded horses. However, should you - the horse and rider - be the cause of an accident because you are in the cycle lane, there is a possibility that a claim for damages against you could succeed or succeed in part. So use them with care and respect for other users. If there's a grass verge, use that in preference to the surfaced track.
The BHS has taken the Opinion to the Dept for Transport, who agree that it sets out the law correctly and are going to amend the next edition of the Highway Code to reflect this.
This does not affect either riding on pavements (footways), which is an offence, or riding in discretionary cycle lanes (the ones marked with dashed lines) which anyone can use without offending. Regardless of which strip of the highway you're using, everyone - particularly the police who want to avoid clearing up the mess and lots of paperwork - would rather you were slightly illegal than somewhat injured or thoroughly dead.
PARISH COUNCIL SERVICES
In the forthcoming year, the Parish Council plan to purchase additional land to extend the cemetery at a cost of some £4,000. The cemetery is regarded as an important part of the village but it is expensive to maintain. Last year, expenditure exceeded income by around £800 and this pattern is likely to continue.
Those who have visited the village hall recently will have noticed the considerable improvements that have been made to both the toilets and the kitchen. Both were necessary in order to comply with present day regulations. The Kitchen works cost the parish £7,000 and the remainder was met by a grant of £12,908 from WREN (Waste Re-cycling Environmental) for which we are grateful. Repairs to the fabric of the building cost £1,400 for maintenance of the flat roofs and £400 for specialist repairs to broken glass in the stone surround windows. Further limited improvements are planned for next year.
Grass cutting, to maintain the pleasant environment in which we live, costs around £1,000 every year.
In total, the Parish Council had to spend some £22,000 last year against an income of £11,300. Some of the excess had been provided for in previous years but it has been necessary to increase the precept to meet anticipated expenditure in the coming year.
