NEW FACES ON THE PARISH COUNCIL
| The May election resulted in changes to your Parish Council. Five of the previous Parish Councillors retired after long and dedicated service to the local community. On behalf of the residents of Granby and Sutton we take this opportunity to thank publicly Angela Sinclair, Rosemary Cranswick, Doreen Watson, Linda Singleton and Jane Tubbs for their considerable efforts and dedication to public service. Between them they have clocked up over 50 years on the Parish Council. | |
|
The new Councillors, elected for four years, are Andy Betts, Erika Humphreys, Christine Lineker, John Miles and Philip Straw. Richard Watchorn and David Preece were re-elected. At the first meeting Richard Watchorn was voted in as Chairman and Andy Betts as Vice Chairman. There has been a Parish Council in Granby and Sutton since 1894. As the first tier of local government the Parish Council has a duty to represent the residents of Granby and Sutton. The new council is committed to consultation and increasing public involvement in carrying out its responsibilities. It meets each month on the second Tuesday (with the exception of August) and has an annual meeting in May. Residents are entitled to attend the meetings but are not allowed to speak, although the meeting may be closed for a period to allow contributions from the floor. The agenda and the minutes are posted on the notice board at Granby village crossroads. The Parish Council also has a web site that has useful information on Council business: http://www.parish.council.freeuk.com Please contact any of the parish councillors if you have any issues that you wish the council to address. At the October meeting it was suggested that we proceed with a Parish Plan. This is a formal consultation exercise that will provide a representation of residents’ views, concerns and suggestions which are then formulated into an action plan. It will place the council in a much stronger position to apply for grants for any future developments or projects. The process begins with a public meeting where you will be provided with information and given the opportunity to become involved in the process. This meeting will take place on 5th December at 7.30pm in the village hall |

VILLAGE HALL IMPROVEMENTS
|
By the time you read this, the latest improvements to the village hall should have been completed. You will notice the redecoration inside and out and the changes to the committee room with a suspended ceiling, new electric sockets, alternative lighting and new curtains. These changes to the committee room will reduce the echo and screen out the dark on cold winter evenings, hopefully making the room more inviting to use. A new drain has also been installed to take away water from the roof near the main entrance and alternative lighting has been fitted to the main hall. The total cost of these improvements is £5348. The hall rental income only meets the running costs so money for improvements has to be found elsewhere. We are most grateful to Nottinghamshire County Council and Councillor Martin Suthers for a grant of £1243 and Rushcliffe Borough Council and Councillor John Cranswick for a grant of £1160. The remaining £2945 comes from the Parish Council tax payer. If you have not yet seen the improvements get along and take a look. The hall is available for hire at a reasonable rate. Contact the Parish Clerk. The excellent presentation of the village hall is largely down to the work of Ron Merryweather. Although Ron receives a salary, he puts in many additional unpaid hours. The recent renovations have increased Ron’s workload and we put on record our sincere appreciation of his time and efforts. |

VALE FIRST RESPONDERS SCHEME Vale First Responders (VFR) is a group of volunteers set up to provide critical help in medical emergencies in the general area of the Vale of Belvoir. The group is linked to the East Midlands Ambulance Service as a part of the 999 service.A responder may be called out if they can be on the spot before a paramedic or ambulance can arrive. This is usually within 10 minutes of the 999 call being made. This potentially life saving service is particularly valuable in rural settings where it may take longer for an ambulance to respond. The VFR is on the lookout for volunteers to undergo training to the required standard so that they can join the rota of responders. They are also willing to visit local organisations such as Womens’ Institutes, Parish Councils etc to provide basic instructions in sustaining life in the case of an emergency. For more details contact VFR, Glenn House, 15 The Green, Hose, Leicestershire, LE14 4JP
NEWS FROM ALL SAINTS CHURCH Since the last newsletter, further grants have been promised by the Roof Fund so it is hoped that work will begin in early Spring 2008. The whole church roof is to be replaced which should make the church watertight for another 100 years. In the meantime, anyone who wishes to make a donation to the fund, please contact the Treasurer, Ron Padley on 01949 851365. Our recent harvest supper, comprising an excellent three course meal with wine and a short sketch made for an enjoyable evening and raised the sum of £484.76p. Thanks to all who supported this event. Thanks to Michael and Carole Headland who took part in the Notts Historic Churches Bike Ride on 8th September and raised £57 which is divided between the Trust and All Saints Brenda Preece |
BEST KEPT VILLAGE COMPETITION You may know that we have entered the best kept village competition in previous years and have been successful in winning the award on two occasions. We intend to enter for the 2008 competition and, if our run of successes is to continue, we need to start planning and preparation as soon as possible. You will hear more about this in future newsletters but in the meantime you can get involved with helping to keep our beautiful village looking as it should.
Do you have time to spare on a Saturday morning? From time to time we have clean up sessions in the village, pruning, litter picking, village greens and village hall grounds. If you are free on Saturday 24th November and / or Saturday 8th December for a couple of hours and would like to help out contact Phillip Straw on 01949 851556.
NEW EDITION OF THE
It is six years since Len Watson published the book of Granby and Sutton and fourteen years since the edition on Langar, Barnstone and Granby. Len thinks that it is time for another edition and asks that if anyone has photographs (old or new) that could be included, would they contact him directly on 01949 850615. So search through those old albums and cardboard boxes. He would also appreciate any short stories or descriptions that are suitable for inclusion.
LETTERS Parish Councils are frequently seen as busy bodies in our lives who spend our hard earned money. Well that may be the view of some but when something goes wrong the Clerk’s telephone and front door get busy with calls for action. Planning is an issue that prompts comments from parishioners as does speeding traffic. While the former usually affects a small localised area of the village, speeding traffic impacts on us all and we can do something about it. The cars that speed through our village come from somewhere. More often than not it is somewhere not too far away, folk from neighbouring villages going to and from work, doing the school run or off on a shopping or leisure trip. It is those who know the local roads who drive the fastest. The simple plea is that you treat other villages as you would wish others to treat your village. Please observe the speed limits. They are there for the safety of our communities. Philip Straw |
GRANBY & SUTTON WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Granby & Sutton W.I. have enjoyed an interesting and varied summer programme, the highlight of which was a most successful garden party at the Owthorpe home of Dr. & Mrs M Hutson held in aid of this year's charity, 'Skylarks' Visits to Rockingham Castle, Hebbs Farmhouse gardens and the Eglantine Vineyard at Costock, for a tour and wine-tasting, were enjoyed by members and their guests. Speakers including Nick Tegerdine (APAS - alcohol & drugs), Mrs Chanden Patel (Indian Food and cookery demonstration), and Chris Weir (County Archivist) gave informative and interesting talks. Forthcoming events include a tour of Nottingham City Council House and tea with the Sheriff. Members have also taken advantage of social events and workshops organised by the County Federation, and 26 members are currently participating in courses at Denman College in Oxfordshire, thanks to a successful Awards for All Lottery bid. Granby & Sutton W.I. is a happy, thriving group, drawing members from a number of communities in the Vale of Belvoir. Prospective new members and visitors are welcome. DRINKING FOR CHARITY Congratulations to the Marquis of Granby pub that raised £2500 for charity at its August beer festival. The money, which was raised by a charity auction and a raffle, has been donated to the Nottinghamshire / Lincolnshire Air Ambulance Appeal and to the Matt Hampson Trust (a sports injury charity).

EXTENSION TO THE CEMETERY
If you have visited the cemetery recently you may have noticed ongoing work to prepare and enclose additional land. This land was purchased by the Parish Council to extend the available space for burials. It is anticipated that this facility will be required in roughly eight years time. A decision needs to be made regarding the interim use and upkeep of this area. The simple solution is to sow grass but this will require regular maintenance at an additional cost. An alternative suggestion is that the land could be let out as allotments to residents of Granby and Sutton. It was agreed at the October Parish Council meeting to consult residents on this idea. Please contact a Parish Councillor by November 30th if you have views on this matter.
On the subject of the cemetery, Parish Council minutes reveal that the existing cemetery was donated by the Duke of Rutland in the 1890’s. The cost of a burial at the time was five shillings for an adult, four shillings for a child under 12 years and two shillings for a still born baby. Thomas White, the original grave digger was paid three shillings and sixpence per grave. |
VILLAGE EVENT 2008 Granby and Sutton have a tradition of organising events where local people have the chance to meet up and enjoy themselves. An example of this was the millennium celebrations. It has been some time since such an event took place and the Parish Council thinks that it is long overdue. We have no fixed ideas of what type of event this will be except that there should be something of interest for all age groups. We suggest that it takes place in the Spring or early Summer of 2008. A planning group will be required and we are asking for volunteers to get involved. If you have a little time and the motivation to work with others to make this a day to remember, contact Andy Betts on 01949 851874. NEW DOG BIN IN GRANBY

THANK YOU Councillor John Cranswick would like to thank all those residents of Granby and Sutton who supported events he organised during his year as the Mayor of Rushcliffe which enabled him to hand over the sum of £19,000 towards the University of Nottingham's Neonatal Scanner Appeal. |
A dog bin has recently been installed on the outskirts of the village. It is sited on the Plungar road between the sewerage works and the bridge. The council have agreed to empty the bin at regular intervals. If this is used sufficiently it is planned to site a second bin on Sutton Lane. |
