After several months of rumours it has finally been announced that a new
Airport Terminal building is to be constructed on the northside of the
airport. As the centrepiece of the Skypark industrial development, announced
at the same time, the new facility could be operational by 2008. It is
expected to take 3 years to construct the terminal and the large apron area
and associated taxiways. Existing northside operations are expected to be
moved to the existing terminal site. The work will necessitate the closure
of runway 13/31 and the removal of several existing hangars. Precisely where
or what will replace them on the southside is not known. Last year some
250000 passengers used the airport and this year 310000 are expected. The
existing terminal has a capacity of 600000 and this figure is forecast to be
met by 2008. The new facility will cope with over 1 million passengers per
year.
January got off to it's usual slow start, but there were several interesting
visitors noted. Tyrolean Airways operated a Saturday lunchtime Fokker 70
rotation from Innsbruck and the usual Futura, Air Europa, Air 2000 & Air
Malta flights continued. Diversions (seemingly a rarity these days) were
noted on several occasions, but did not result in any aircraft types or
Airlines that we had not seen here before. European Air Charter operated a
flight to and from Madrid on the 2nd and Manx commenced a short season of
Saturday flights to Chambrey using the Bae.146 G-MIMA. The Comed Aviation
Bandierante PH-FVC was re-registered as G-ODUB and noted here on several
occasions. Another "Bandit", OY-BNM of Muk Air, was also noted northside.
The former Debonair Bae.146 G-DEBC was delivered in from Luton for it's new
operators British Midland Commuter. Currently still in Debonair colours, it
is to be re-registered as G-GNTY. It's stablemate at Luton G-DEBH was
expected but has been reported as OY-RCA with Air Atlantic. Another former
Debonair machine to arrive for maintenance was G-MABR of British Regional.
Formerly G-DEBN, the aircraft was delivered from Aberdeen via Norwich where
it had been painted in British Airways "Union Flag" colours.
Biz jet visitors were far fewer than in previous months but still produced
items of interest. Gulfstream 3 VP-BOR was a first-time visitor whilst
Gulfstream 5 N282Q called in at Exeter this time last year. Falcon 50 F-GMOT
was probably the pick of the rest which, in the main, consisted of some
fairly regular visitors. At times Exeter seemed to be the home base for
Tulip Air. The King Air 200s and Navajos of this Dutch operator were to be
found parked on the apron throughout most of January along with the almost
ever-present Falcon 20 PH-BPS.
A new resident appeared in the shape of Cessna 152 G-BXRN with the Exeter
Flying Club and an old landmark disappeared. The Shorts 330 G-BNTX, wrecked
in a gale some time ago and (I'm told) used as an unofficial spares source,
was scrapped and only a few small bits remained at the time of writing. On
the subject of the long-term residents, the Bae.748 G-AVXJ is slowly being
robbed of parts and cannot be too long for this world.
