WELFORD PARK AND STATION

With the return of the Base to the RAF  in 1945 it was decided to complete a rail link to the main line at Newbury into the camp to service the bases new roll as a munitions storage centre. Just 3 miles outside the camp a spur was taken off of the Lamborne Branch Line.

The Ministry Of Defence decide to create a series of  interchange siding just beyond the Welford Park Station and a branch spur running into the camp.

The sidings were capable of holding 40 trucks each although a restriction of only 15 was placed on the line by British Rail.

Upon arrival in the camp an assortment of sidings were created with a number of dedicated links to various parts of the site. Also a small engine shed was built.
