Field Days at RAF Honington

RAF Honington is situated
just outside Bury St. Edmunds and has been affiliated with the RAF section
at St. Ignatius for many years.
Originally opened in 1937
as a bomber base, Honington is now the RAF Regiment Depot, the last Aircraft
leaving in 1993 when the Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit moved to Lossiemouth..
Every year cadets get to
visit the station for a field day. The program includes:
-
Shooting on the small arms trainer
(SAT) range using the SA80 weapon
-
Getting hands-on tuition with
the Rapier FSC Surface-to-Air missile system (no live missiles though!)
and 360 degree simulator
-
Visits to the RAF Regiment Museum
-
Getting hands on with all the
Regiments equipment
These field days allow cadets
a totally different insight into the RAF which is not often "on display"
when visiting for summer and easter camps.
