Stuff that's rattling around The Mind at the moment...
Head
by The Monkees
(Film & Album, 1968)
The Critics say: 'One of the trippiest fims ever, as the Monkees attempted to break away from their teenybopper image by taking large amounts of hallucinogenic drugs (allegedly) and inviting Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson to make a film around them.' (Delirium Records)
'The Monkees’ first and only feature film is a mind-blowing, psychedelicized romp through very bizarre territory. Combining very funny gags, a wild visual sense and a thoroughly indescribable plot, Head goes where very few rock music films have dared to tread.' (Roxie Cinema Homepage)
'"Head," the 1968 soundtrack to the Monkees only movie (so far), remains as loopy and weird as the film itself...Each of the six songs on "Head" is a worthy effort...deconstructs the Monkees' image, origins, career and reasons for existing with hysteric delight.' (Carl Cafarelli)
The Mind says: Highly enjoyable (if slightly irritating) answer to The Beatles Help!. Often overlooked in favour of their British 'rivals', this is still an interesting slice of 60's US psychadelia and an attempt by the band to get serious about their frivolousness. Written and Produced by Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson (the former also directed, the latter appears in a cameo), who went on to make Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Blood and Wine together.
The soundtrack is equally varied, ranging from typically wacky (War Chant, Daddy's Song) through to downright trippy (the very psychadelic Porpoise Song). Forget the Greatest Hits compilations, this is the recommended purchase.
