The Walkington Society was founded in 1988, by Roderic Walkington, with the purpose of bringing together the relatively small number of people who possess the Walkington family name or who have a Walkington family connection.

Sadly at the end of 2008 after twenty years it was agreed that the Society would be wound up due to a fall off in support, generally due to ageing of many of the original members and little interest from potential younger members bearing the Walkington name.

Roderic started the society by located the 150 Walkington households who had their names entered in the UK telephone directories and wrote to them all asking for expressions of interest. There was an enthusiastic response to that initial letter and the fairly informal Walkington Society was formed.

In April 1989 the first Walkington Weekend was held at The Beverley Arms, Beverley, East Yorkshire, England which is only three miles from the pretty Yorkshire village of Walkington. Further Walkington Weekends were held at The Beverley Arms, once every three years, until 2004.

There was one resident of the village of Walkington, in particular, who was a great friend of the Walkington Society since its inception and who worked tirelessly to bring the Walkingtons and the residents of the village together: One Ernie Teal MBE, a man with a wealth of amusing stories and an energy which belied the fact that he was an octogenarian, celebrated his diamond wedding in 2001.

Many of those who attended the Walkington Weekends discovered family connection which they were not previously aware of.

Jack & Colin Discovered a Common Ancestor on the First Walkington Weekend.

Jack from Cumbria and Colin from Bristol, both in England, discovered that they had the same great great grandfather, who was a provision merchant in Leeds England during the Victorian era. Those looking for clues regarding their own family ties may like to look up the genealogy link on this site to see if any connections can be found.

The response to a circular suggesting a Walkington weekend in 2008 was unfortunately very disappointing and this led to the decision to reluctantly wind up the society.
