'Walkingtons in Walkington' - April 2004

Current Walkington Society Web Site - Launched 15 May 2004

This web site supersedes the original Walkinton Society site, which had been current for a number of years. It differs from the original site in a number of minor ways but the important differences are that it is a multi-page site and the links to the Walkington Village and Genealogy sites. Comments regarding the content and layout of the site are welcomed and should be forwarded for the attention of Colin Walkington at the e-mail address below.

Subject: The secret to a long life

A tough old cowboy from Wolf Creek MT, once counselled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of Gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning. The grandson did this religiously and lived to the age of 110. He left 4 children, 20 grand-children, 30 great-grandchildren, 10 Great-great-grand-children and a fifty-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

Message from Terry in Toowoomba Australia - Received by e-mail 26/11/04

Hi Walkingtons! Terry Walkington from Toowoomba Australia here. I only arrived late at the Walkington week-end but did enjoy it and meeting some of those who turned up. I have been teaching science in England the past 12 months and had a great time travelling and meeting people. I loved the village (Walkington) and the town of Beverly where the dinner was held. I am off up to Leeds this week-end and will be near Dewsbury where my grandfather William James Walkington was born in 1857. Our branch in Australia was based mainly around Sydney. I still have cousins and other relatives around Sydney. I sent home some photos of the 'Walkington week-end ' to my brother and sisters. They were very jealous! It was always in family lore that we came from Yorkshireand were in some way connected to that village back there. I was surprised to find out that there were so many American Walkingtons, based largely it seems around Chicago. I am heading back home to sunny Australia at Christmas (and my old job) but will carry some fond memories of my stay in the UK. I may try to get back in 2007 for the next reunion. My next big trip though is South America. If you come to Australia look us up. Our 'branch' has not had much contact with the society before. You can get me on walkintonterry@hotmail.com . 26/11/04

The 6th Walkington Weekend - 23rd to 25th April 2004

The sixth Walkington Weekend was held at the Beverley Arms and Walkington Village from Friday to Sunday on the 23rd to the 25th of April 2004. It was nice to see many old faces and one or two new ones, although sadly some staunch supporters were unable to make it on this occasion. The weather was very kind, bright and sunny, with temperatures approaching 20 Centigrade on the Saturday and Sunday. It was nice to see Ernie Teal still giving strong support with his after dinner speech on the Friday, despite recent illness, particularly as he was due to re-enter hospital for further treatment. The Walkington Village gave their traditional hearty welcome at the village hall on Saturday complete with coffee scones and cakes. This was followed by entertainment from the Ladies Choir and community singing. The food at the Beverley Arms was judged to be excellent and following the Saturday dinner the usual interesting speeches were given by a 'broad spectrum' of Walkingtons. Notably Jack from Cumbria had a positive response to his appeal for help in publishing the Walkington World and the Walkington Society Web Pages.

The 7th Walkington Weekend ?

The next Walkington Weekend, expected to be held in April 2007, has had to be postponed. Since then, the response to a circular suggesting a weekend in 2008 has unfortunately been disappointing.
