Diary - February 2004

Despite the snow and frost the plants are looking good and ready for their first watering when this cold spell eases. Even the plants in the unheated greenhouse are still healthy – they will have to wait a bit longer for their first watering – they might have a little spray in a week or two if we get some sunshine. My seeds from BCSS duly arrived – 18 varieties of Lithops. I am always surprised at how quickly they germinate. Some put in an appearance after only five days. By the 14th day there was germination in all 18 pots. Last week my Mesemb Study Group Newsletter arrived with their seed list. The seeds I ordered from them arrived by return of post and they are now potted up and should soon be germinating. As you may have guessed, I am fascinated by the challenge of growing plants from seed. Has anyone seen the very fine grade of aquarium grit on sale recently? I like to use it to top dress my seedlings but have only seen the coarser grit in the garden centres at the moment. Don’t forget the Zone 9 Convention on April 18th. Bob and I have tickets for sale for £10 each (to include morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea). There will be some of us travelling with empty seats in our cars so if transport is a problem speak to one of us. |
