Battle-shirts

Guerrilla-shirts or Over-shirts:
Guerrillas
There are some photos posted below which are possibly not photos of guerrillas but they have been posted as those of guerrillas elsewhere so I have included them so you can see them thus you can do your own research on them if you so wish. I have included charcoal drawings by Anna Lee Dillenbeck, about 1890, and Elmer Stewart in 1893, both are believed to have used photos for their drawings. I have also included other illustration that have been posted.
Heavily embroidered shirts became closely associated with Missouri guerrilla fighters during the Civil War. These shirts were made as plainly or elaborately as the wearer desired with some shown here that are out and out the shirts associated with guerrilla fighters but others wore only red or fancy shirts it seemed correct to include all types here. Some of the plainer ones were decorated with a simple trim tape or ribbon one-half inch or inch wide, this was most commonly used on the collars and cuffs. Sometimes they had elaborate heavy embroidery around the neck and pockets. They were produced in a variety of colours, with many in red, and fabrics i.e. woollen-flannel, cotton and were often bright and check or plaid.
