16th Tennessee Volunteer
Infantry Regiment
Casualties (killed and died)

On the 26 January 1904 Colonel John H. Savage applied to the Warren County Court for the erection of a monument.  In his petition he mentioned 'that he had the honor to command, as its colonel, the Sixteenth Tennessee Regiment of the Confederate States Army in the great war and that said regiment was composed of ten companies, four which were made up of young men from Warren County, the other six from the adjoining counties of DeKalb, White, Putnam, Van Buren, Grundy and Coffee.'  He further pointed out 'that about two Hundred twenty-two (222) soldiers of said regiment were killed or mortally wounded in battle' and asked that 'a suitable monument at a cost of about Fifteen Hundred ($1500.00) Dollars, upon which is being placed the names of the killed of the regiment....to be permitted by your honorable court to erect said monument in the Southwest corner of the court house grounds in the Town of McMinnville, Tennessee.'
The Colonel's original idea had been to place the monument on the battlefield at Murfreesboro, where so many of his Regiment had died, but this wasn't to be.  The Court unanimously granted the Colonels application.  The Colonel died on the 5 April  and so didn't live to see the unveiling of the monument at 1100 on the 10 May 1904.  It originally stood in the green outside the courthouse but the courthouse was extended and now the monument still stands on a corner behind the McMinnville Courthouse,  it is of white marble and stands 30 feet high.
I have included in the following list not only those who were killed on the day/s of the battle but also those many who died of the wounds they sustained there, this happened over the following days and up to three months later.  The list also includes those who died of disease while serving with the Regiment either in hospital or at home.  I have included here those which had served time in the Regiment and died while serving in other Regiments and the more unusual one of Hiram Taylor (Pomp) Kersey who deserted on 4 April 1863 raised a guerrilla band and was killed with the remainder of his gang when only 17 years old.
I have added their highest rank, where possible, and any differences in their names.  Also if during their time they were in two companies this is shown in brackets, as is the possibility that they were in a different Company.  After the reorganization quite a few transferred to the cavalry or were detached.  If I have found which cavalry or infantry Regiment its also listed.
There are, I'm sure, some names that I've been unable to find, and that due to the similarities of some have made a mistake in thinking that they are two different people, or when two people have listed them as one.  This list of those that were killed and died while serving at the moment stands at 416 names and again could be updated with yet more, or even reduced in number as things are corrected.

Monument as it is today
